I am frequently asked what I buy – well a lot actually! But I thought I’d share with you what I always keep in my makeup bag and buy again and again. Yes, there are several other pieces I like a lot and recommend, but these are my staples that I keep coming back to.
Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara – I get big, full lashes with this mascara. I don’t know why this one is in a gold tube, it’s usually black. Maybe this was a promo or something. I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve bought this.
Jouer Tinted Moisturizer – This is the first version, not the matte. I haven’t tried the matte yet and with my oily skin , maybe I should. But I love the coverage with this formula and it doesn’t make me super oily either. And the SPF 20 is great too. I’ve gone thru 3 tubes at least.
Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder – I hate a heavy powdery finish, but like the smooth finish and setting this one offers. It does not leave a heavy powdery finish on the face – just smooths it out and sets the makeup. This powder lasts a long, long, long time as just a small amount is needed.
Laura Mercier Eye Basics – Wheat is the shade I use. I refuse to ever put eye makeup on without applying this first, I love it that much. I have redness on my eyelids and that makes the redness disappear and smooths out the skin and makes eye makeup stay put all. day. long. I’ve bought this so many times I’ve lost count.
Tom Ford Lip Color – This is not the new lighter version but the full on coverage version. It’s expensive but it’s The. Best. Lipstick. Ever. in my opinion. The colors are neutral to bold and makes the lips feel amazing and I think I keep at least one in every makeup bag I own. I think I currently own 5, maybe 6 and some are duplicate shades.
Chanel Natural Finish Pressed Powder – This is the compact pressed powder version of the one listed above. I own a few of these and make sure there is always one in a handbag I may grab. I use shade #30 Naturel – Translucent 2. This works wonders when my skin gets oily mid-day and I need a touch up. It looks invisible so there is no heavy powdery finish on the face. Again, I’ve bought this numerous times.
By Terry Touch-Expert Advanced – Terry was the woman who created Touch Eclat for YSL when she was their makeup director and this one I like so much better. It gives more coverage, so it’s a great concealer, but it’s not dead or pasty on the skin. It does a beautiful job of covering up discoloration and adding a little life to the face. I have purchased this a few times since I started using it last year.
Burberry Lip Glow – It’s hard to come across a better gloss. Yes, there are some really great ones, but I own so many shades of Burberry. They have beautiful cosmetics in general, but the texture, non-sticky factor and color selection is fabulous. I own several and repurchase when I’m out of a shade.
Hourglass Brow Sculpting Pencil – I am a fan of Dior’s Brow Styler, but when this came out last year it bumped that out of first place for me! It comes in a few shades and one end is the retractable shade that blends into the brows smoothly and the other end is a spooly brush to blend it all in seamlessly. I’m still on my first one as this lasts a long, long time, but I will be repurchasing this again and again.
Lancome Definicils Mascara – When I want detail and length in my lashes I don’t go without my Definicils. I think this may be their #1 mascara for years standing and there’s a reason for it. It’s great! I can’t count the number of times I’ve purchased this over the years.
Lancome Miel Glace Blush – A few years back I had gotten a list of Lancome makeup items an artist had used on Kate Winslet for an awards show and this blush was listed. Her cheeks look great – not a bright color, but warmth and definition added to the cheeks. When I checked it out I thought no way was that the shade, until I tried it on. This one in the photo looks untouched because I just repurchased it. I’ve bought it at least 4 times and I will go into fits if it’s ever discontinued.

Your list exemplifies what I love about being over 40 (Over 50, now): We buy luxury cosmetics, expensive lipsticks or concealers, and don’t feel guilty about it in the least! When I was 16, it was “Clinique” or “Bonne Bell Lip Smackers” and the classic hot pink/lime green “Great Lash”. But now, it’s Edward Bess, Laura Mercier, Jouer, Bobbi Brown, Burberry or Le Metier de Beaute. I see these brands as part of my upkeep, and I have no intention to buy cheaper imitations!
I agree!!
I love this posts. About to order the Laura Mercier Eye Basics now!
You won’t regret it – it’s “fabulous”!
I have a question , and i hope you can help. Im 37 and my skin type is oily. Should i be picking a foundation for aging skin, or for oily skin?
Im thinking about picking up dr jarts bb cream, and im not sure which one would be best to get.
Alexandra, If you’re going to be using a BB cream – you don’t need to choose between a foundation and skincare – they’re all-in-one. I am not personally familiar with Dr. Jart’s line, but as I was doing a little research I would stay away from the Water Fuse line, but either the Black Label or Premium line, depending on which feels best on your face. Both contain anti-aging ingredients so you are getting that in both, it will just depend on which line works best to maintain your oily skin. From what I am reading, the Black Label might work best, but if you can sample them both, I’d give them a try.
