I recently conducted an interview with Pamela Mitchell, founder & CEO of The Reinvention Institute about her campaign with MORE Magazine & Oxytrol for Women. The “Open A New Door” campaign will allow one lucky 50+ woman the opportunity to be awarded $10,000 to pursue her dream. Along with Pamela was Dr. Roshini Raj, who is a board certified gastroenterologist & internist with a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine & an undergraduate degree from Harvard College. I found their answers extremely inspiring!
1. You are a highly motivated and inspirational woman. At what point in your life did your gift become evident? Was there a particular event or was it a cognizant decision that you made to motivate, coach, and inspire others?
Pamela: When I became a coach, my friends said I was finally getting paid to do what I had been doing all along! When I was in my corporate career I loved to mentor people, and help them figure out what they wanted in their lives. I also gave them practical advice about what I had learned worked for me as I was accomplishing my goals. People would come back to me six months or a year later and tell me how much that advice I’d given had helped them move forward. Reinvention is a practical skill you can use anytime you want to make a change in your life. When I decided I was ready to leave my second career – at the time, I was negotiating overseas partnership deals for entertainment companies – I used that skill to make the transition into being a coach. I was ready to stop the heavy-duty travel and to fulfill my calling by pursuing my mission to help people. I listened to my friends!
2. Do you feel that 50+ is an age in life where women decide to start a new venture or adventure? Is it because they feel compelled to put their needs ahead of those around them, perhaps for the first time in their lives?
Pamela: Yes, through my many years of coaching I’ve seen that women 50 and over are in the second stage of their lives and are ready to face new or different opportunities. They may have recently become an empty-nester and are focusing on their own needs for the first time in a while. Also, some women may have also been on a career path for decades and are looking for a change. In fact, according to a recent MORE magazine & Oxytrol For Women survey, 97% of women age 50 & over would choose a variety of ways to reinvent themselves in the near future, showing that this age group is truly looking for a new adventure in their lives.
3. How does Oxytrol for Women fit into the message that you would like to convey to age 50+ women?
Dr. Raj: Any reinvention starts with confidence, and I’ve seen that for some women, their confidence can be affected by their health. I’m so supportive of women feeling like they are confident and in control of health conditions, like a chronic condition. Managing a chronic condition such as overactive bladder (OAB) is one obstacle women 50 and over can face in reinventing themselves. OAB can impact a woman’s life in various ways such as travel, work productivity, emotional & physical well-being as well as family relationships & social activities. Oxytrol for Women, the first & only OTC option for OAB, wants to make sure that OAB sufferers don’t let their condition affect their ability to reinvent themselves, which is why they are providing resources to help smooth their path.
