I’m sure you’ve noticed by now with the change in weather your skin has changed, too.  Mine sure has. In summer I am very oily and fall and winter normal/dry. So what should we do to change up our skincare regimen so we are getting the best benefits?  Fab Over Forty went to the experts at RoC Brand to find out.  This is where dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert works with RoC to bring us professional skincare advice. She’s a New York based dermatologist specializing in skin cancer prevention/treatment, cosmetic dermatology, anti-aging and laser surgery.

When the weather becomes cooler you have to change your skin care regimen to address the shifts in your environment. The air becomes drier (the humidity levels drop), the wind picks up, and the heaters go on. This all results in irritated, sensitive skin. I always suggest switching to gentler cleansers and richer, cream-based moisturizers (as opposed to lotions) during the Fall and Winter. I also suggest avoiding long soaks in hot water, which strips your skin of its natural oils.

Retinols and sunscreens are essential elements of an anti-aging strategy all year round. Regardless of the temperature outside they reduce fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, and the signs of premature aging. Since your skin can be more sensitive during the winter months you can either switch to a gentler retinol, like the RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Skin line, or alternate your normal retinol use to every other day. The benefits are just as good when used in this fashion. You should also not forget your sunscreen. Snow reflects even more UV rays than concrete (think of the ski goggle sunburn)! I like products that are easy to use and combine SPF with anti aging ingredients. One example is RoC’s Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. I have noticed a dramatic difference in the appearance of my patients who begin a skin care regimen that includes a retinol and an SPF at 40, 50 and even 60 years old, so it is never too late to start taking care of your skin!

This year, RoC introduced Hexinol technology in the newly reformulated RoC Multi-Correxion collection. Hexinol technology helps the skin look, feel and act younger by reducing the appearance of the five main signs of aging skin:

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles
  2. Pigmentation and photodamage
  3. Firmness and elasticity
  4. Dullness
  5. Dryness

Make sure to listen to what your skin is telling you and change up your skincare accordingly!
