I may not always jump to the latest product announcement and actually, most of them I’d rather see in person so I can talk about them after testing and seeing. Such is the case with the latest Bobbi Brown collection called Black Velvet. Yes, the images of the model are gorgeous, but also the images of the makeup are very, very dark. My initial reaction was that it was all too dark for my fair skin. This would be a gorgeous collection for darker skinned women. I know I get a lot of requests for makeup for darker skinned women and this is definitely a collection for them. But what about the fair skinned gals like me?
Last week I had an opportunity to check it out in person. Again, after seeing the collection in person my immediate reaction was “too dark”. In fact, someone else who was fair like me was looking at it too and that was her immediate reaction. Until she saw me wearing the Creamy Lip Color in Black Cherry. In the tube it looks very, very dark. However, once you put it on it’s surprisingly not so intensely dark. It’s a rich berry red shade on me and I actually ended up buying it! The other piece in the collection that I didn’t buy, but ponder my decision not to is the Sheer Lip Gloss in Black Chocolate. It’s really the shade of what is shown on the website, only it is sheerer than what it looks like online. So very pretty. I think the other lip shades were just too brown/black for me.
The eye shadows are also gorgeous. I’m truly not convinced they are very wearable for someone of my skin tone, but in a deep, dark smoky way, yes. I did not purchase any of these just because I personally know I wouldn’t get the use out of them that I’d like. But, the shades are seriously gorgeous! I did, however, go for the limited edition Kohl eye pencil in Black Plum. I love the Black Plum Gel Eyeliner I already own and am thrilled with this soft, easy to use pencil too.
My overall opinion of this new collection? Don’t just pass it by if you think it’s too dark. In the end you may not purchase because of the deep tones, but I say to at least give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised like I was!
