Since I’ve grown my hair out in the last few years I never wash it daily like I used to when it was short. Besides, there are so many great dry shampoo options to carry your blowout past the first day or two. I’ve used several, so I thought I would share my favorites, my not-so favorites. Hair type and texture can really depend on which dry shampoo will work best for your hair. My hair is shoulder length, I have a lot of hair, but my hair is baby fine with soft natural wave and in humidity it can frizz.
Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Dust It Mattifying Powder – This is the only powder in the group. My sister introduced me to this a few years ago as a volumizer to use on the crown of the head to help out with the dreaded flat hair. I had tried several other powders before but, like so many dry shampoos when they first came out, they were uncontrollable powders and they just didn’t work for my hair type. But this one is fabulous! The pros – it volumizes, soaks up the oils which can flatten the hair and it lasts throughout the day. Cons – like most powders it’s difficult to control and if you get too much in one spot, well, you’re kinda screwed. Yes, it is white – it kind of looks like baking soda, but when you touch it the powder disappears and becomes like a matte silicone, working in a way like a silicone face primer. There are several small holes at the top in an X shape that spread the powder out a bit to help prevent too much concentrated distribution. That said, shake it while closed and then gently sprinkle at the top of your head and work it in with your finger tips. You can use it before or after blow-drying your hair. Which, blow drying my hair to work any of these products in is what I do. Available at Ulta and drugstores for $22. It’s a small container, but will last a very long time.
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray – This has probably been known as the crowning product of dry shampoos. It’s a spray that has the intoxicating signature Oribe scent and leaves not so great smelling hair smelling wonderful. Unlike a powder, you can use this spray all over your hair easily, whether roots, at the mid section, you choose where your hair may need it and easily spray there. I may be the only person in the world who can’t use this spray. Like I said previously, I have a lot of hair, but it’s baby fine and when I use this my hair looks great. For about an hour. Then my hair quickly becomes flat and so slick that I have to put it in a ponytail because I look like a drowned rat. While my hair may look silky smooth it loses all volume and texture and quickly is flat and difficult to work with. I’ve told my hair stylist this and he is shocked because no one else has this issue. OK, it’s me! Available at salons and SpaceNK for $44.00
Drybar Triple Sec 3-In-1. Texturizes, Amplifies Refreshes. I had heard some great things about this so of course I had to try for myself. I love this! While there is a Drybar Dry Shampoo, I like Triple Sec better because it’s made for overall hair, where the Dry Shampoo is specific for roots. Again, a spray that can be used all over hair where needed, it mattifies, absorbs oils, can re-activate my soft waves, smells divine so bye-bye hair stink. It lasts most of the day, but they also make it in a mini-size too so it’s easy to throw in your handbag and freshen your hair throughout the day. I love this and have used it for many many months. Living Proof – Full Dry Volume Blast. Instant, lasting volume and texture the can says and I can’t argue there. Triple Sec was my favorite until I tried this. It is ahhhmazing! One of my issues with Living Proof products is that their signature scent is too strong. It does not agree with me, so I was hesitant to try. But when I sprayed a bit in the store I felt that the scent was only lightly noticeable. That I can deal with. I’m glad I took the chance as I LOVE this dry shampoo. It’s the perfect combination for my hair – volume, texture and yes, the scent gets rid of the stale hair smell and I don’t notice any scent after a short while. It can be sprayed anywhere on the hair, but the trick to make it really work properly is to shake it after every spray to activate the product. When I use at the roots, I spray, leave it for a bit, then gently rub it in to give my hair volume or take my blowdryer on low/cool and re-style my hair. This lasts all day long. I don’t feel like half way through the day I should be doing something with my hair again. It’s soft, movable, and looks like the best 2nd (or 3rd) day hair ever!
