Women over 40 beauty, skincare, fashion, fitness and lifestyle, Keeping it Real

I’m a productaholic if there is such a thing.  I’ve purchased, tested, sniffed, loved, hated, raved and who knows what else, about products this year.   Some are products I’ve been using quite some time and others are new to me, and some are now on my “can’t live without” list.  So for you I’ve compiled a list of products to share that are my favorites in 2008 and are in no particular order.

  1. Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Cleanser.   This cleanser is so gentle to dry and sensitive skin (which I have both) yet it cleans without leaving your skin feeling dry, filmy, or stripped of natural oils.  The plus is that it has a light lavender scent to it.
  2. Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.  If you have any lines or large pores or just want incredibly smooth skin to apply foundation, this is the primer to get.   It allows you to have a flawless application.
  3. La Roche-Posay Anthelios 40 Sunscreen.  I’ve had two too many close encounters with melanoma so now I don’t live without sunscreen.  I used this on my face and it doesn’t clog pores and best of all it protects my skin.   It contains Mexoryl SX – a must to have in sunscreen if you want proper protection.  In the wintertime I use SPF 15 on my face and hands.
  4. Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Sunblock 45.   I love that this is a spray and it goes on your skin without feeling sticky or oily, so it doesn’t feel like you have anything on at all.   Sunscreen is an absolute MUST in beauty and body care.
  5. Quadra Beiges de Chanel. This was a limited edition eye palette, so if you got it great, if you can still find it consider this your lucky year!   This palette has become my “go to” selection of eye shadow shades.   I get compliments every time I wear the shadows and you can do a clean day look or a smoky eye look with the shades.
  6. Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy for Sally Hanson Concealer.  After meeting Carmindy and she suggested I try this I ran to Ulta to purchase.   I’ve not been disappointed since.   I love the texture and the coverage of this concealer.   And you certainly can’t complain about the price.
  7. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner.  Love, Love, Love this eyeliner.   It goes on smooth and stays on ALL day long.   I own several shades of this liner.   The key to application is to use the brush she designed for this.   I also dip the brush and scoop a little bit out onto a tissue and work it into the brush before application.   It helps to make the application more smooth.
  8. Giorgio Armani Lipsticks.   I love any formula of the GA lipsticks – Armani Silk, Sheer or Shine.  All the textures are exquisite and the range of shades is staggering.   You will be certain to find one or 20 that you love.   I own more of these lipsticks than even a beauty junkie should!
  9. I have a two-way tie on lip glosses.   First up is Giorgio Armani Lip Shimmers.  I have purchased and re-purchased so many of these glosses.  The texture is creamy without being sticky.  The applicator brush doesn’t fan out which can make application difficult, it stays intact.   And the glosses last a long time.
  10. My other favorite lip gloss is Rock and Republic Luxe Lip Gloss.  I was just recently introduced to this line and have fallen hard for it.  I will be posting very soon on this line.   But, this gloss is creamy like a lipstick and not sticky at all.  It has a sponge applicator and is giving my GA lip gloss a run for it.
  11. Cover Girl Lashblast Mascara.  The big, bold, bright orange tube is not to go unnoticed.  Neither will your thick, luscious eye lashes.   This creates loads of volume.  Yes, the wand has a large head, but it does the job beautifully and at a great price.
  12. Kate Somerville Quench.  This moisturizing serum gives your skin a boost of hydration that lasts all day long.   If you have dry or dehydrated skin you will love this addition to your moisturizer.   I have recommended it to many of my friends and they went out and purchased it and love it as well.
  13. Laura Mercier Eye Basics.  I buy this in the Wheat shade.   It neutralizes the redness on my lids and gives my eyes a smooth base for eye shadow application.   It also is a great base to prevent shadows from accumulating in eye creases.
  14. Eucerin Calming Creme.  This is the “work horse” of body lotions.   It’s not glamorous, it’s not fou fou.  It does the job of moisturizing your skin without being pasty, sticky or slick.   It was recommended by my dermatologist for calming dry skin irritations.  I use it in the morning after showering and my skin never feels dry throughout the day.
  15. Frederic Fekkai MORE All-Day Density Styling Whip.    A great hair thickener and styling volumizer.   It’s a whip that doesn’t dry your hair, but gives it thickness and volume to make it easier to work with fine hair.
  16. Estée Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang.   This is the fragrance I can’t live without this winter.   I’m picky about fragrance because of sensitivies, but this one I will rave about all day long.
  17. Makeup Brushes – again a tie, and this time between higher end Trish McEvoy and bargain brand Sonia Kashuk for Target.   Trish McEvoy brushes are available in kits, travel size and individual and are high quality brushes that you will have forever.   Some of mine I’ve had for years and they’re still like new.
  18. Sonia Kashuk for Target Brushes are wonderful quality at a bargain price.   These are very comparable to expensive brushes and have raved about them many times.  Many are made of natural hair as well.   Again I’ve had some of my brushes for years and they’re just like new.
  19. Lancome Bi Facil eye makeup remover.  Not only does this remove waterproof eye makeup, it gets all traces of mascara off lickity-split.   It’s non-irritating to my eyes as well.
  20. And last but not least is my number one beauty product that I can’t live without – especially a must for winter or dry climates – a humidifier.   I keep a small one by my desk during the day and one in my bedroom at night.   It helps keep your skin hydrated and fresh.  Make sure it is kept clean and the filter is changed often so as not to breed bacteria.  If you have a humidifier, I promise your skin will love you.

I look forward to 2009 as a year of wonderful new product experiences and discoveries.   I can’t wait to try many and share with you all.   Have a beautiful 2009!
