Hi Kari,  My husband and I are planning a nice Valentines Day dinner and we also celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary this month too.  I would like to look special, but I typically don’t get very dressed up for occasions and need some help.  Do you have any advice?  Thanks, Kathy P.

Thanks for contacting Fab Over 40 Kathy, and congratulations on the double special occasion!  I’ve pulled together some ideas I have for you – a look that is dressy so you feel as special as the event.

Go all out and get a dress that is not only age appropriate, but beautiful as well.  This age-appropriate Adrianna Papell dress has a nice length, doesn’t reveal too much and yet it is glamorous and sexy. The sheer neckline and sleeves give a bit of coverage without being too covered up.

This amethyst flower pendant necklace by Blue Nile would look beautiful against the delicate sheerness of the dress.  The silver chain and Swarovski gemstones would shimmer beautifully on the neck.  See below on how you can enter to win this gorgeous necklace!

I love this simple yet shimmering clutch by DVF.  With the pleats in the dress, the flower in the necklace and the bow on the shoe, keeping the clutch simple yet sophisticated doesn’t make it too overwhelming for the rest of the outfit.

Add a pop of fun with these colorful shoes by Kate Spade. They’re feminine, sexy and not too high so your feet won’t hurt by the end of the night.

This beautiful Day and Night Neutrals Eye Lip and Cheek Palette by Sue Devitt is perfect whether you like to keep your makeup simple or add a bit more intensity. The shadows can go from light to dark and the lip shades are a medium pink to a deep burgundy, allowing you to create a customized look all your own.

Blue Nile has generously offered a sweepstakes for Fab Over Forty readers to enter to win one of these gorgeous Amethyst Flower Pendant (shown above) valued at $240!  Here are the rules:

  1. Read the “Disclosure” page link above
  2. Enter your name in the COMMENTS (The crown at the top of the post under the heading)
  3. Tell me if you like to do anything special for Valentines Day
  4. One entry per person
  5. Only one winner will be chosen and product will be sent by Blue Nile PR firm
  6. Contest ends on Monday, February 6th at 5:00 p.m. CST
  7. Winner will be notified by email and will have 48 hrs to respond or a new winner will be chosen
  8. Good luck!

We usually don’t do anything special for Valentine’s Day! This year I am getting my hair cut and colored that night–that is special for me!!!

In the past we have gotten engaged on Valentine’s Day (14 yrs ago) but ever since we just try to have a nice dinner at home (if it is a weekday) or sometimes we will go out. This year I think we will eat in and that is about it.

  3. Tracey on the 01. Feb, 2012 remarked #

We like to spend the evening in, making something we don’t usually eat and share a great bottle of wine.

We generally exchange cards and perhaps something small and sweet (I’ve done coookie grams in the past)…but with a 3 year old in the picture, going out to dinner isn’t usually in the cards! LOL

    Best, Lisa

We always celebrate Valentine’s Day in a big way because it is one more opportunity to say how much love is in our hearts for each other and our children. I love these types of holidays and opportunities!

  7. Mel on the 01. Feb, 2012 remarked #

I like to give my children Valentine treats and I make their cards as well. I also make a card for my husband and I make a special gift basket full of his favorite chocolates/treats!

Well, we used to do something romantic for Valentine’s Day, but with three kids, I now spend the day going to loud, sugar filled kids parties!

I’ll be watching tv and reading a book this year. Don’t feel bad for me, but after devoting myself to my husband for the past almost 20 years, he decided he wants a divorce. Some men are just not right. I know a lot of men are really great though, so I do wish everyone a wonderful Valentine’s Day full of giving and getting Love!

I got little guys at home so we will bake delicious red velvet cupcakes & watch a cute romantic comedy of my choice! Yay!

I won’t be doing anything out of the ordinary. I am thinking about going to to the movies to see The Lady in Black. Talk about an oxymoron-a horror flick on the day meant for lovers.

We usually try to go out for a nice dinner sometime around Valentine’s Day. Not on the actual day-it’s just too busy!

I will be taking Valetine’s Day off to join my kindergartner in his class party and also to make a special treat for my hubby/kids and decorate the house. Since it’s on a school night this year, I will try to make it special for the whole family. I also get little gifts for all of them. My mom always made a big deal for Valentine’s Day so I try to do the same for my kids.

  21. Mary on the 02. Feb, 2012 remarked #

We adjusted our schedules for a few days off. Instead of having a romantic dinner at our favorite restaurant, this year we’re going to a bed and breakfast and will have a cozy romantic dinner somewhere new and some quality alone time.

  22. mary clay on the 02. Feb, 2012 remarked #

we used to go to dinner at a really expensive restaurant, but, now, with all the bad things that have happened to us, we’ll probably have a frozen pizza! so i would love to win this necklace! this was NOT a sob story to get the prize! :)

  23. Lynne on the 02. Feb, 2012 remarked #

I will be sending emails and phone calls to my children who have left home and are living on their own. Reminding them how loved they are, and will then plan a romantic dinner with my husband at our favorite small restaurant.

My husband’s birthday is on St. Valentine’s Day so it’s a double celebration. This year I’ve booked (as a surprise) a dinner/cruise going round and around the NY harbor with music/dancing. A good memory to savor forever. Hoping for calm waters though, oops!

My husband does not believe in or acknowledge Valentine’s Day. He says it’s just a holiday created by Hallmark to get more business. I know one year, years ago, I got flowers from him but that’s been it. My mom usually gets me flowers though! I like to get my kids something special.

  29. Sherry on the 02. Feb, 2012 remarked #

Valentine’s Day has always been a special day for me! I remember when my Dad used to get us heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates when we were little. I had two sisters and he made sure each one was different for each of us! My Mom would get the huge box with lovely decorations. He is no longer with us, yet I still remember how proud he was to give his “girls” his gifts of Love each year! Thanks Dad…Love you!!

I am going to send loving inspirational messages to Facebook peeps, family and friends. Play with my cat. Organic coffee with coca powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and ginger and a tablespoon of coconut milk with breakfast and snack. Nice homemade breakfast and lunch/dinner combo. Tiny cup of Turkish black tea with jasmine green tea after lunch. A chocolate homemade dessert. Bubble bath with body cream and body powder after. Pretty makeup, hairstyle and outfit. Walk outside, take photos. Dance workout at home. Listen to some love songs, watch romance movie and read in bed!

My Husband is career military and for the last 10 years or so it’s been very difficult for us to share valentines day together (either he’s deployed or training or etc.) so it’s a big deal to us. We are either going to go down to have dinner with an ocean view on the North Shore of Oahu or we will go in the opposite direction to Honolulu for the same type of dinner. (no kids! whoohooo).

Sometimes he’ll still send me flowers and we’ll do the card thing but the most fun is just watching TV and eating candy!

  52. Monique Porter on the 05. Feb, 2012 remarked #

Valentine’s day shouldn’t be so significant, because we are supposed to show our loved ones how much they mean to us on a consistant basis. I give and recieve love and gifts regularly, so nothing “special” is planned on February 14th.
