Today in the New York Times there was an article titled “When Beauty Fades” about the documentary by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders “About Face: The Supermodels, Then and Now” to be aired on HBO Monday. The title “When Beauty Fades” quite angered me. I mean really? Just because these women are over 40 does it mean their beauty has faded? I think not. I had thought we were more progressive than that, but then we get slapped in the face with the whole age/looks issue again.
We grew up in the age when the images of Paulina Porizkova, Jerry Hall, Isabella Rossellini, Beverly Johnson, Cheryl Tiegs and many other supermodels were on every billboard, magazine, TV ad and more. I still enjoy seeing these over 40 women in various ads or editorials. It’s great to see that they still have “it” and 20, 30 or more years later we still enjoy seeing them and that they do matter, and age can’t take that away.
If you have HBO you’ll have to watch this and tell me what you think – I unfortunately don’t get HBO.

This is one man’s opinion only. And…he probably came up with the idea because he knew it would be an easy sell that would attract many viewers. I for one am comfortable in my skin and have no intentions of watching this.
First of all, STOP reading the New York Times! 🙂
I’ll try to catch it on HBO and let you know what I think. I agree with you, Kari! It’s sooooo irritating!
I think that people need to understand the title is by the NYTimes that I don’t agree with. However, the show seems interesting – read the article to see what the documentary is about, you may have another opinion on watching it.
I am fab and well over 40 so I really appreciated this post – thanks!
It irritates me but doesn’t anger me…nor does it surprise me.If we could listen in 100 years from now,I have a feeling this debate would still be raging on. I for one,am proud to be 50 and I know I’ve still “got it”(and not just because a 38 year old man asked me for a date)!! I’d watch it,but I don’t have HBO either.I also believe women get more beautiful with age because we’re smarter, have more confidence and could give a damn what others think.
We can’t win! if we just age naturally we’ve let ourselves go, if we get any treatments or plastic surgery then we are fake wannabes!
I take any articles like this with a grain of salt. At then end of the day Paulina and Co. have made millions selling their looks so they are laughing all the way to the bank!
