One of the most common questions I get is “What’s a good hairstyle for women over 40 so I don’t look old and frumpy?”   Women often question whether or not to cut their hair short, have bangs or no bangs, if keeping hair long, how long is appropriate?  There are many questions we have about hair, and it’s important to keep it up-to-date so we can keep ourselves from looking frumpy as we age over 40.

Aveeno Celebrity Stylist, Patrick Melville

Aveeno beauty expert and celebrity stylist Patrick Melville, was kind enough to answer this question for Fab Over Forty readers.

“As you know, women over 40 do not have to cut off their hair to look less frumpy.  I suggest cutting the hair to the collarbone with some longer layers.  This will give the hair some energy and still allow you to be very versatile with styling options.  For example this cut allows you to put your hair back into a low chignon or a French twist.  This will still give you that soft, sexy look without having to cut off your locks, while still being youthful and feminine.”

This is really helpful. I’ve been thinking about cutting my hair shorter and now I just think I’m going to add layers!

Hello, yes I do have long hair, past my bra straps. It does seem kinda drab. Maybe adding some layers would be a little sexy and flirty. Im only 41. Thank you to Mr. Aveeno for your help.
