These women are nowhere near forty. What do these three women and their styles have to do with it?
Correct, they are nowhere near 40, but their hairstyles are certainly inspiration for a hairstyle at any age. In fact, I work with someone who is in their mid 50’s and has a hairstyle like one of these women, and she looks lovely!
I’ve had the same hairstyle since college with minor variations. Similar to Julianna Margulies when she lets it get really curly:

Never shorter than shoulder length and usually longer. I get my hair cut like two or three times a year and don’t color or perm. I like to “wash and go” and don’t use a hair dryer. I often show up at work with my hair still damp.
I’d really like to update my look now that I’m 40-something, but I’m worried that if I went short I’d end up with triangle head or something I hated or it would take a lot of products and time to get it to look right.
I’m torn between it being ok to have long simple hair when your grays are starting to pop out or getting a more professional adult style. I’m a legal secretary at a state govt. office.
Any advice?

Thanks Carla, I’m glad you enjoy the blog. It sounds like you have a professional job, and my first inclination is to say that since you’re only 40 something to cover those grays. There are so many at-home products out there that are great, especially if you don’t have high maintenance color already – such as highlighting etc. Check out totalbeauty.com for hair color products that other women have given their unbiased opinions on, as possibly a place to start for what products will work.
As far as the curls – I always wanted to have curls! Don’t we always think the other side of the fence is greener!? Anyway, if you are tired of it because you’ve worn it that way for so long and need a change – a simple thought is, have you ever tried a flat ironor had a blow out? You could have a sleek look and if you don’t wash your hair every day, it can last a few days and would be a nice change.
A few other suggestions is to find a well-known professional hairstylist in your area or near an area where you live and have a consultation. If going thru a major hair change, a consultation first is a must. It also makes you look at what you are really willing to do as far as product and maintenance are concerned. You can discuss with the pro what you are or are not willing to do and move ahead as to what will work for you.
My last suggestion is to pick up Nick Arrojo’s book called “Great Hair”. I have been meaning to discuss this book on my site, and now you’ve just reminded me again to do so. He talks about things that most of us don’t consider. It’s not just about face shapes, but what is your hair texture and what will it or will it not do. There are also some really great looks for women that have short, medium and long hair that is curly – realistic styling options and how to maintain the looks. I highly suggest checking this out!
